Why you read Fantasy
Remember dragging your half-conscious mind through the endlessly boring pages of "important" literature that your English classes pushed on you? I felt like a fly trying to swim in molasses. It was a struggle to stay awake through twenty pages, much less the hundred to two-hundred expected of me in college. A breakthrough came to me, though, in Middle School. I wandered into a book store and happened across a book titled A Spell for Chameleon, by Peirs Anthony. It was the right book at the right time. I immediately became immersed into a realm of fantasy: magic, centaurs, dragons, hopeless quests, damsels in distress, heroes, heroines, spells, beasts... my God, it was nothing short of a miracle! Forget the twenty pages; I tore through the book in about three days (which for me in Middle School was saying something). I couldn't put it down. I thought, "Where the hell were these kinds of books in English class?"
I know it sounds bad, but I had no want to read about the humdrum existence that I was already living in. Now I needed books that threw me into battle with evil warlock kings, a sword fight with dark elves, or an epic journey to free a magicked land from the grips of the underworld. From then on, I have been a loving fan of fantasy and science fiction, and I haven't looked back. I tell anyone, "Why dream in a setting of the mundane, when you could surround yourself in a world beyond your own imagination, and be whisked away into the impossible?"
